Our Philosophy

At Barrett & Gilbert our firm philosophy is summed up by three words: integrity, excellence and aggressiveness. Both Attorneys Barrett and Gilbert have over 64 years of legal experience. 

In 1996, Dan Gilbert, a sole practitioner at the time, began a seven year legal quest of seeking compensation for 5 navy and military officers and their families. In 2000, Greg Barrett later assisted Dan at the trial.  They represented the navy and military officers, who were imprisoned and tortured by Islamic terrorists in the 1985. These men were aboard the hijacked TWA Flight 847, while it was en route from Athens to Rome. One American sailor was killed at the Beirut Airport and his body was thrown out of the plane. The remaining sailors and one American Army officer were tortured and imprisoned by the terrorists in Beirut. After a week long trial, D.C. Federal District Court Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson awarded a total verdict of $308 million in April, 2002. This is the largest award of money damages on a per diem basis of all the judgments entered for living victims of terrorism to date. The compensatory damages, plus interest, was paid to our clients through an act of Congress, signed by President George W. Bush. In 2003, Dan was able to collect partial payment of the judgement from Iranian assets through the US. Treasury Dept. Office of Foreign Assets Control. 

The story of Flight 847 has been the subject of two major motion pictures, and several books. These results could not have been obtained without aggressive pursuit of our clients' rights. 

In March, 2004,  Dan Gilbert agreed to represent some of the members of the USS Pueblo in a law suit against North Korea. With the assistance of of a D.C. law firm, in December, 2009, the D.C. Federal District Court Judge Henry H. Kennedy Jr. entered a judgment for $65 million against North Korea. 

With a combined legal experience of over 64 years, Greg Barrett and Dan Gilbert are dedicated to treat every case with the same degree of competence and diligence.
